Gabriele Grunewald, Heather Kampf, Jon Peterson to Run GNC Liberty Mile in Pittsburgh July 31; Heather Kampf Wins Ryan Shay Mile; Gabriele Grunewald 2nd at London 1500m

Minneapolis/St. Paul - July 28, 2015 - Three Team USA Minnesota runners will compete in the GNC Live Well Liberty Mile in Pittsburgh on July 31, including defending champion Gabriele Grunewald, two-time champion Heather Kampf, and Jon Peterson who has run 4:00.41 in the mile on the track.

 

The fourth edition of the liberty Mile in downtown Pittsburgh features $25,000 in prize money, with awards going 10 deep for the American Development Pro Mile.  The race is also the third stop on the Bring Back the Mile Grand Prix Tour 2015.

"I'm really looking forward to returning to Pittsburgh to defend my title in the GNC Live Well Liberty Mile," Grunewald said.  "This will be my third year racing it and this event has quickly become one of my favorites on the road racing circuit.  I can't wait to get back this year and take a crack at the course record."

Grunewald first ran the race in 2012 and that year was runner-up to teammate Kampf, who won the race in 2012 and 2013, and was runner-up to Grunewald in 2014.  This will be Kampf's fourth appearance at the Liberty Mile.

Grunewald has posted 4:21 in the road mile and she is the 2014 USA Indoor 3000 meter Champion.  Kampf also has a road mile best of 4:21 and is the three-time USA 1 Mile Road Champion (2012, 2014 and 2015).  Peterson most recently won a mile race on the track at the Letterkenny Mile Challenge in Ireland on July 10.

Ryan Shay Mile - July 25

Heather Kampf won her fourth consecutive title at the Ryan Shay Mile that took palce on July 25 in Charlevoix, Michigan.  Her time was 4:26.83 - last year at this race she posted her personal best time on the roads of 4:21.39.  At this year's edition of the women's invitational mile, Kampf led four other women under 4:30 at the event that is held as part of the city's annual Venetian Festival.

Sainsbury's Anniversary Games in London - July 24-25

Gabriele Grunewald finished second in the 1500 meters at Sainsbury's Anniversary Games in London on July 24.  Her time was 4:06.35.  The next day, on July 25, Grunewald paced the women's Diamond League 5000 meter race.  Earlier in the week, on July 21, Grunewald posted a personal best of 2:01.23 in the 800 meters at the Gala dei Castelli in Bellinzona, Switzerland.

Other Results - Week of July 20-25

Gina Valgoi was second and Emily Gordon finished in seventh place at the Life Time Fitness Torchlight 5k in downtown Minneapolis on July 22.  Valgoi's time was 17:03 and Gordon's was 17:58.

At the 41st annual Bix 7 Mile race on July 25 in Davenport, Iowa, Jon Peterson finished 13th with a time of 35:14.
