Houston Marathon Foundation Continues Commitment to Elite Distance Running Including Team USA Minnesota

Minneapolis/St. Paul - Nov. 3, 2015 - The Houston Marathon Foundation (HMF) announced this week that it will provide $45,000 in financial support for several U.S. elite long-distance runners and development programs, including to Team USA Minnesota, Zap Fitness, Team Green (Woodlands, Texas) and to five 2016 Olympic Trials Marathon qualifiers from the Great Houston Region.

"Providing support for elite U.S. distance runners across this country has been a priority of the Houston Marathon Committee and the Foundation since the inception of both organizations," said Houston Marathon Foundation and Committee Executive Director Wade Morehead.  "It is an honor and a privilege to support these wonderful people and talented athletes in their efforts to achieve their goals on an international stage amongst the finest long-distance runners world-wide."

For the third consecutive year, the HMF will support Team USA Minnesota, whose training center was formed in 2001.  Team USA Minnesota's mission is to provide an opportunity for talented distance runners to train in an environment that will prepare them to compete national and internationally and to raise awareness of the sport of distance running.  Since its founding, the training group has developed 23 national champions and an Olympian.

"We are so honored to once again receive a grant from the Houston Marathon Foundation," said Patricia Goodwin, president and founder of Team USA Minnesota.  "Our athletes have been competing in Houston in either the half marathon or marathon for over 10 years and appreciate the tremendous support and confidence the organization has shown in our training group.

"And we are especially excited about the opportunity this year to establish a residency in Houston during January and February so our distance runners can prepare in a warm weather location for the upcoming Olympic Trials in the marathon and on the track."

In addition to the numerous U.S. elite distance running programs supported by the HMF since its inception in 2008, the HMF has provided funding to create opportunities for new runners in the Greater Houston Region and also to support the vibrant local running community, including youth programs and after school running programs.
