"The River Road" by Coach Dennis Barker

Team USA Minnesota's Coach Dennis Barker has published his first book called "The River Road" which is a novel about becoming a runner in 1972.  The book is set on the road along the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities and is filled with stories about runners, running, history, the 1972 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials and the Munich Olympics.  The book brings to life an era in which the U.S. competed for gold in nearly every distance running event.

As many of the sport's icons dominate their events in Eugene and prepare for Munich, a 15-year-old runner in Minneapolis prepares for his first season of varsity cross country.  Inspired by Jim Ryun, Frank Shorter and Steve Prefontaine, along with a number of prominent Minnesota distance runners of the time, a high school runner named Lenny learns that Olympic distance runners - Ron Daws, Van Nelson, and Buddy Edelen - have come from Minnesota and trained on the same River Road on which he runs.

"It's about a world of running lore that a new runner never knew existed that opens up to him and helps him begin to explore and realize his own ability to run," said Barker.  The book is available on www.amazon.com.
