Heather Kampf Continues Outdoor Track Season with Meets in Italy and Ireland; Results from U.S. Olympic Track Trials in Eugene

Minneapolis/St. Paul - July 13, 2016 - Team USA Minnesota's Heather Kampf has bounced back from the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials to continue her outdoor track season in Europe, with meets in Italy and Ireland.  At the Meeting Sport Soliderta in Lignano, Italy, on July 13, she placed third in the 800 meters in 2:01.26.

Next up for Kampf will be a meet in Padova, Italy, on July 17, followed by the Morton Games in Dublin, Ireland, on July 22.  She will compete in the 1500 meters in Padvoa and in the women's mile at the Morton Games.  She has a best in the 1500 of 4:04.46 and a road mile personal best of 4:21.39.

Kampf competed at the Track Trials in Eugene through two rounds of the event and did not advance to the finals of the 1500.  Two weeks out from the Trails, she incurred a calf injury.  "No great story comes without hiccups," she wrote on her Facebook Page, "and mine just unfortunately came in the final preparation for the Trials.

"It took nine days of treatment, pool workouts and prayers to get to running pain free the Saturday of Trials week.  However, my legs weren't quite back to pre-injury 'pop' to finish the semi-final 1500 meter race like I needed to."

Still feeling fit, Kampf decided to head to Europe and further test herself on the track.  When she returns stateside, the four-time U.S. Road Mile Champion plans to compete in a number of mile races through mid-September.

Olympic Trials Results

In addition to Kampf, teammate Biya Simbassa qualified to compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field with a 13:29.51 best in the 5000 meters.  He competed in the semi-finals of the 5000 but did not advance to the final.

"What a great experience I had at my first Olympic Trials and racing the best runners in the country," said the 23-year-old Simbassa.  "I learned a lot during the week of the Trials just watching other runners.  I'll be back stronger and faster in 2020."
