Antonio Vega Finishes 23rd at World Half Marathon

Minneapolis/St. Paul - Oct. 19, 2010 - Team USA Minnesota's Antonio Vega finished in 23rd place and second American on the five-man U.S. team at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Nanning, China, on Oct. 16.  His time was 1:03:37 (winning time was 1:00:07).  The U.S. men's team was sixth out of 11 teams.

"I ran pretty much the entire race with Sean Quigley (who finished first American in 1:03:23)," said Vega.  "The two of us worked together to try to pick people off throughout the race.  Towards the end of the race you could see that a lot of people were falling apart due to the heat.  I feel like I just kind of ran out of room to try to catch people.  If I could go back, I would have put myself with the chase pack in order to give myself a better chance to finish in the top 15.

"It was really hot and humid during the race.  The temperatures were in the low 80's with a lot of humidity.  The race was a lot slower because of the hot conditions.  I went out a little bit more on the conservative side because of the heat.

"Making my first world team was a great experience.  The race was well organized and I had a lot of fun representing the USA in my first major competition."

The IAAF World Half Marathon Championships will next be held in Bulgaria in 2012.
